Restoring Puerto Rico’s coral reefs.

Let’s rebuild San Juan’s beautiful reefs!

Our mission at Pa'Ti Mar is to sustainably restore and revive coral reefs in the San Juan, Puerto Rico Metropolitan area. We are dedicated to protecting our island's threatened underwater ecosystem through direct restoration efforts and educational initiatives.

THE PROBLEM

In 2020 the El Escambrón and Piedra de La Ocho Reef suffered a catastrophic die-off event that resulted in the loss of two ESA-listed critically endangered species of coral (Elkhorn & Staghorn), a massive die-off of sea life and changed our underwater paradise in incomprehensible ways.

After a majority of the reef’s living corals were killed, many of the remaining corals were infected at higher rates than before by the deadly coral disease, Stony Coral Tissue Disease (SCTLD).

OUR PROJECT

Pa´Ti Mar is a grassroots organization launching San Juan, Puerto Rico’s first land-based (ex-situ) coral nursery. We will cultivate Mountainous star coral (Orbicella faveolata) and the Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata). Both are ESA-listed critically endangered species of coral.

Simultaneously, we will conduct educational programs on ocean conservation for both youth and the general public.

Lets save Escambrón!

It is estimated that by 2050 the world will lose 90% of its coral reefs. We can be part of the change to stop this from happening by investing in our ocean. Help us save this reef and be a part of the solution by donating today!
